The definition of moderate drinking is something of a balancing act. Moderate drinking sits at the point at which the health benefits of alcohol clearly outweigh the risks. Now a growing body of research says any alcohol raises the chance of premature death from a variety of causes.
As a result of these physiological differences, the same number of drinks will result in different BALs in a 140 lb woman and a 140 lb man, or in a 20-year-old man and a 60-year-old man with identical body weights. In fact, in nutritional epidemiology studies that investigated the consumption of various food categories, reported alcohol intake was particularly reproducible compared with the reported intake of other nutrients (Longnecker et al. 1993). Research conducted using each perspective seeks slightly different information from study participants.
- On the other hand, the variability also can be a handicap, because the information collected about alcohol consumption often is not comparable across studies.
- For example, beverages such as “ light” beer, “ light” wines, and wine or spirit coolers, which have slightly lower alcohol contents than the corresponding regular beverages, have been introduced.
- Acetate then is broken down, mainly in tissues other than the liver, into carbon dioxide and water, which are easily eliminated.
- Across Europe, for example, more than two-thirds do in most countries.
- These physical and social effects may also contribute to health and well-being.
- Here, we see particularly high levels of alcohol abstinence across North Africa and the Middle East.
Former drinkers were persons who had consumed at least 12 drinks in a 12-month period sometime in their lives, but not during the 12 months immediately preceding the interview. Lifetime abstainers were those who had never consumed at least 12 drinks in a 1-year period (Dawson et al. 1995). Results from these two surveys may report different numbers of abstainers, not because of true differences in drinking practices but because of definitional differences. Many current definitions of moderate drinking are based on a specific number of drinks consumed during a designated time period (e.g., per day or per week). This definition, however, raises the obvious question, What is a “drink” ?
When it comes to alcohol, if you don’t drink, don’t start for health reasons. During pregnancy, drinking may cause the unborn baby to have brain damage and other problems. During pregnancy, it increases the risk of pregnancy loss and of a child having growth and developmental problems in future. While consuming alcohol in moderation appears to have some benefits, it is important to remember that too much can be devastating for overall health and even life-threatening in the long run. The investigators reported in the journal BMC Medicine that people who drank from 2 to 7 glasses of wine per week were much less likely to be diagnosed with clinical depression.

A “drink” is defined as a shot (1.5 ounces) of spirits, a 5-ounce glass of wine, or a 12-ounce bottle of beer. Many of these trials have been conducted for weeks, and in a few cases months and even up to 2 years, to look at changes in the blood, but a long-term trial to test experimentally the effects of alcohol on cardiovascular disease has not been done. A recent successful effort in the U.S. to launch an international study was funded by the National Institutes of Health. Although the proposal was peer-reviewed and initial participants had been randomized to drink in moderation or to abstain, post hoc the NIH decided to stop the trial due to internal policy concerns. For some analyses, such as studies investigating drinking consequences (e.g., drinking and driving and other alcohol-related injuries and violence) not only the amount but also the pattern of alcohol consumption is important and should be assessed. For example, imagine two people who consume identical average volumes of alcohol (e.g., 14 drinks per week).

Showing your patients a standard drink chart (printable here PDF – 184 KB) will help inform them about drink equivalents and may help your patients to estimate their consumption more accurately. Moderate drinking is having one drink or less in a day for women, or two drinks or less in a day for men. Consuming moderate amounts of certain types of alcohol, such as wine, has shown some benefits.
Does moderate drinking cause cancer?
Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a medical condition characterized by an impaired ability to stop or control alcohol use despite adverse social, occupational, or health consequences. It encompasses the conditions that some people refer to as alcohol abuse, alcohol dependence, alcohol addiction, and the colloquial term, alcoholism. Lasting changes in the brain caused by alcohol misuse perpetuate AUD and make individuals vulnerable to relapse. In the chart, we see the prevalence of alcohol dependence versus the average per capita alcohol consumption. There is no clear evidence that high overall consumption (particularly in moderate quantities) is connected to the onset of alcohol dependency. What to Do if You Relapse When we look at national averages in this way, there is no distinct relationship between income and alcohol consumption.
Because different research traditions have different focuses, each tradition emphasizes different research questions, which may be hard to compare across studies. On the one hand, this diversity can be advantageous in that the four disciplines complement each other in revealing drinking patterns and problems. On the other hand, the variability also can be a handicap, because the information collected about alcohol consumption often is not comparable across studies.
